Common Types of Burn Injuries
Workplace Explosions – The negligent operation or maintenance of equipment on the job site can lead to massive explosions causing serious burns and other injuries.
Electrical Burns – Exposure to high-voltage electricity can result in severe burns where the electricity contacts and exits the body. A powerful enough shock can even cause cardiac arrest. Thermal Burns – Direct exposure to open flame, boiling liquids, steam or hot surfaces can result in serious burns.
Chemical Burns – Corrosive chemicals, including both acids and bases, are found in many places including factories, manufacturing plants, laboratories and even homes. These caustic chemicals can be extremely damaging to human skin resulting in severe burns.
Radiation Burns – Exposure to X-ray radiation or even ultraviolet lights from tanning beds can result in serious burn injuries.
How Severe is My Burn?
- First Degree (Superficial Thickness) – A first degree burn indicates that only the upper-most layer of skin, known as the epidermis, was burned. These burns are similar to sunburns in that the skin will be red but will momentarily turn white when pressure is applied to it. First degree burns rarely require serious medical attention and typically heal by themselves in a few days.
- Second Degree (Partial Thickness – Superficial) – A second degree burn indicates that both the top layer of skin, the epidermis, as well as the second layer of skin, the dermis, have been burned. These burns often lead to blistering and will appear dry with a whitish coloring. Depending upon the depth of the burn, a skin graft may be necessary.
- Third Degree (Partial Thickness – Deep) – A third degree burn indicates serious damage to both the top layer of skin, the epidermis, and the second layer of skin, the dermis. These severe burns appear dry with a dark brown appearance, similar to leather. Skin grafting will most likely be required.

You could be left with permanent physical as well as mental disabilities including scarring, disfigurement, loss of limb, nerve damage, respiratory damage, nightmares and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These disabilities will undoubtedly require extensive medical treatment including hospitalization, physical therapy and psychological counseling. The costs associated with this treatment can be difficult to estimate. Only an experienced burn attorney can properly estimate the amount of money you will need in order to live your life as comfortably as possible. Do not allow yourself to be short-changed.
